End of the year

I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas! To wrap up things for the year, here are a few notes:

Unfortunately, I will not be hosting a New Year’s Eve 5k this year, as I work until 3:30. So, get out and get in something on your own, or do a road race. End 2016 on a high!

I will post new workouts on Sunday.

If there are no objections, we will have our club meeting after our Tuesday, January 17th, workout, at a restaurant TBA. Get your annual club membership dues to Sarah Frey ASAP, or bring it on Jan 17th. The club website password will change on February 1st.

Finally, I had such a great 26.2mi workout this past Wednesday, that I will be heading to the national 50km championships, January 28th. In San Diego. As I have done in the past, I have set up a travel fund raising page, as this year all three big races are outside the Midwest, meaning there is an even bigger need for travel money. The page is at

So, everyone have a Happy New Year!

Milwaukee County 1834 to present

Hi Everyone,

In case you need something to do this coming Thursday evening, I will be giving a free slide presentation at the St. Francis Library at 6:00 pm. It will be on how Milwaukee County grew from wilderness in 1834 to the 19 municipalities which we have today. There really are 19, when you stop to list them (Bayside, Brown Deer, City of Milwaukee, etc., to Wauwatosa, West Allis, and West Milwaukee). Each of the suburbs will be included, so come and learn how and why these suburbs came about.

I hope to see you there.

Here are the details:

Milwaukee County – 1834 to the Present; From Wilderness to Nineteen Municipalities

By Ron Winkler

St. Francis Public Library
4230 South Nicholson Avenue
Thursday, November 17th, 6:00 pm

Milwaukee County was created in 1834 from 240 square miles of wilderness, which was then divided into seven townships (or towns). Thus began development from wilderness to rural farmland and eventually today’s Milwaukee metropolitan area with its nineteen municipalities. This urban transformation began in 1846 when the City of Milwaukee was founded. Over the next 100 years, 25% of town land was either annexed by Milwaukee or incorporated as suburbs such as South Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Whitefish Bay, Cudahy, Shorewood, West Allis, West Milwaukee, Fox Point, River Hills or Greendale.
After World War II, there was a bitter battle for the remaining 75% of Milwaukee County’s town land so that by 1957, all of Milwaukee County’s town land was gone, incorporated into the nineteen municipalities that we know today. How and why did this transformation occur in such a short time? Why was there a fight? What were the eight new suburbs? We will answer these questions as we trace the development of Milwaukee County from 1834 to the present.

Best wishes,

Ron Winkler
